The House of Commons International Development Committee has published a report on the issue of sexual exploitation and abuse in the humanitarian sector, including within UN peacekeeping.
UNA-UK contributed to the report with both written and oral evidence, and are cited extensively.
Commenting on the issue of sexual exploitation and abuse in UN peacekeeping, Natalie Samarasinghe, Executive Director of UNA-UK, said:
“Over the last few years, the UN has dramatically stepped up its response to sexual exploitation and abuse in UN peacekeeping. But despite these efforts, harrowing stories of abuse continue to emerge. Part of the problem is that the UN has no power to prosecute military and police personnel – only governments can do so.”
“This is why UNA-UK launched the Mission Justice campaign. It’s high time that states stop pretending this is a matter for the UN alone, and ensure that criminal acts are met with criminal justice.”
