Wider value of UNESCO to the UK

The UK National Commission for UNESCO has released a report titled the ‘Wider value of UNESCO to the UK’, which highlights the benefits of membership of the UNESCO for the UK. UNESCO is the UN’s specialised agency for education, culture and the sciences. The report estimates that UNESCO affiliated organisations in the UK benefit by generating £90 million per year through the country’s membership of UNESCO. This is six times the UK’s direct contribution to the organisation. The report further lists UNESCO’s wider contribution to British priorities such as international and sustainable development, respect for human rights and cultural diversity.

The report will also be discussed at the Parliament in an event organised by the UN APPG on 5 December 2013. Irina Bokova, the Director-General of UNESCO; Professor W John Morgan, the Chairman of the UK National Commission for UNESCO; and Ambassador Matthew Sudders, the UK Permanent Delegate to UNESCO, will be speaking at this event.
