UNA-UK says: green is working

On 18 October 2012 UNA-UK joined other members of the Stop Climate Chaos coalition in a campaign action outside the Treasury to show the UK government that the green economy is working and to call for stronger support for green measures and sustainable growth.

The Confederation of British Industry estimates that a third of new jobs created in the UK last year were 'green', and nearly a million people now work in this sector, according to a recent Green Alliance study.

Progress towards a green economy was a key theme at the UN's conference on sustainable development (Rio+20) earlier this year. With the Energy Bill under discussion in the UK Parliament, there is a real opportunity for the government to clean up the power sector and set clear targets for making sure electricity generation is 'zero carbon' by 2030.

Taking part in the action, UNA-UK Executive Director Phil Mulligan said, “The UK led the world in being the first country to adopt a legally binding Climate Act. Now the government has to ensure we deliver on that promise. The UK has some of the best renewable energy generation potential in Europe. There should be cross-party support for a decarbonisation of the energy sector, which will drive green growth and help fulfil our legal and moral obligations to future generations.”
