UN APPG Chair proposes way forward for chemical weapons in Syria

Following last week’s suspected chemical weapons attack on a suburb of Damascus, UN APPG Chair Lord Hannay has proposed a way forward on the subject of chemical weapons in Syria.

In a Lords debate on Thursday 29 August, Lord Hannay suggested that an ultimatum could be given to the Assad regime to “hand over all their chemical weapons to the United Nations and to allow UN inspectors unrestricted access throughout the country”.

Lord Hannay also called for renewed efforts to pursue a diplomatic solution to the ongoing conflict, urging the international community to redouble attempts to engage all parties in finding a political solution to the crisis.
