APPGs write to FCO minister on the future of the Arms Trade Treaty

Following the failure of the United Nations Conference on the Arms Trade Treaty to adopt a treaty in July, Lord Hannay, Chair of the UN APPG, and Martin Caton MP, Chair of the APPG on Weapons and Protection of Civilians, have written to Alistair Burt MP, Minister for Counter Proliferation at the Foreign Office.

Whilst recognising the leadership that the UK government has shown on this issue to date, the letter urges the UK government to redouble its efforts and build support for a resolution in the UN General Assembly’s First Committee, based on a strengthened version of the text that was on the table at last month's Conference on the Arms Trade Treaty. This would enable a robust treaty to be established in 2012 ready for further signatures.

This initiative reinforces the sentiments expressed in a letter from UNA-UK Chairman, Sir Jeremy Greenstock, to Minister Burt sent following last month's Conference on the Arms Trade Treaty.
