Tonight: Secretary-General candidates to go head-to-head in third hustings debate

UN Secretary-General hopefuls Christiana Figueres (Costa Rica), Vuk Jeremić (Serbia) and Danilo Türk (Slovenia) will go head-to-head in front of a live audience in New York on 13 July.

Timed to coincide with the General Assembly’s informal meetings, this event is the third in UNA-UK’s series of unprecedented debates with UN Secretary-General candidates. It comes at a critical time, with the Security Council due to begin deliberations on the selection process on 21 July.

The event will take place at the CUNY Graduate Center in New York at 18:30 EDT (11:30pm BST) on Wednesday 13 July. It has been organised by UNA-UK in partnership with Global Citizen and the Ralph Bunche Institute for International Studies at The Graduate Center, CUNY.

The event will be live streamed at: www.una.org.uk/debate

During the debate, candidates will be quizzed by the moderators: Thomas G. Weiss, Co-Director of the Future UN Development System Project, and Barbara Croisette, UN correspondent for The Nation and previously The New York Times. Questions will cover a range of challenging topics such as forced migration, conflict resolution and UN reform.

In an interactive session, the candidates will face challenging questions from the audience, composed of civil society, academics, the media and the wider public.

For the past 70 years, the Secretary-General has been chosen in secret, in a process tainted by backroom deals with powerful states. These debates mark a major success for UNA-UK and our 1 for 7 Billion campaign, which has pushed for a more open process.
