SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS

Campaign Hub

The issue

In 2015 the world came together at a UN organised global summit to develop a plan for lasting, sustainable, development over the next fifteen years. The 17 "Sustainable Development Goals" (SDGs) form the central plank of the "Agenda 2030" - and aim to transform our society "to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom" in the memorable words of the UN Charter.

The SDGs are an agenda for governments and for the UN. But they are also an agenda for civil society, for business, and for the peoples of the world. We all need to work together to build a better tomorrow.

The UK has done commendable work in this regard, both domestically and abroad. The UK is the only G7 country to meet the UN target of spending 0.7% of Gross National Income on overseas aid, which has been enshrined into law. But there is no room for complacency: the UK is behind in its domestic implimentation of the SDGs and political voices continue to question the UK's commitment to development.

The UK should be proud of its overseas development spending and should continue to champion overseas aid

The UK should develop an integrated national SDGs strategy for meeting the Sustainable Development Goals
