UNA-UK has written to all major UK political parties, asking them for a statement on the United Nations. By shedding light on the approaches taken by different parties we hope to contribute to an informed national conversation on foreign policy, and help raise awareness of the ways in which the international system delivers benefits to British citizens.

The Scottish National Party's approach to the United Nations

The SNP fully support the work of the United Nations taking action to build peace and security around the world; tackling climate change; promoting sustainable development, human rights, disarmament, gender equality and governance; fighting terrorism and responding to humanitarian and health emergencies.

Today in parts of the world we see great human suffering and turbulent political situations which stem on-going conflict. The SNP have been at the front of calls for the UK government to push for a political solution in the UN to the war in Syria. We believe the UK should redouble efforts to build support for a long-lasting peace agreement.

In East Africa the need for emergency humanitarian assistance is overwhelming. The SNP welcome the UN’s efforts in delivering aid for the millions starving in the region but we want the UK to show more leadership and support efforts to send more aid.

Globalisation has brought challenges in recent years but we must work together to bring about a collective solution. Scotland has played a key role in giving refuge to those fleeing persecution and war torn countries around the world. We’re proud of the compassionate outward looking role Scotland plays in the international community.

The SNP have led calls in Westminster for the UK government to immediately halt Arms Deals with Saudi Arabia. We urge the UK to implement the Arms Trade Treaty and end arms exports to countries where there is concern they will be used to commit war crimes and human rights violations.

We remain the only political party at Westminster committed to the removal of nuclear trident weapons from the UK. The UK government should demonstrate its commitment to the NPT and build diplomatic relations at the UN between nuclear-weapon and non-nuclear-weapon states to bring about multilateral nuclear disarmament.

The SNP remains committed to the role and work of the UN. We hope the UK will take a more pro-active role to tackle the urgent humanitarian crisis in Syria and East Africa and build consensus amongst members to address globalisation and progress nuclear disarmament.
