UNA-UK supports calls for COVID-19 vaccines to be available to all people, everywhere, free of charge.
In June 2020, UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned that:
“A vaccine, by itself, is not enough. We need global solidarity to ensure that every person, everywhere, has access. A COVID-19 vaccine must be seen as a global public good — a people’s vaccine, which a growing number of world leaders are calling for.”
Since then, we have seen extraordinary collaboration across sectors to produce not one, but several vaccines. We have also seen the largest vaccination campaign in history, with almost 8 billion vaccines administered in under a year.
But over 80% of vaccines have gone to G20 countries, with booster programmes now well underway in some of them. Meanwhile, low-income countries, most of them in African, have received just 0.6%.
As a result, we find ourselves facing a new variant with trepidation.
UNA-UK supports the People’s Vaccine Alliance, which is calling for COVID-19 vaccines to be available to all people, everywhere, free of charge.
