Along with fellow panellist Lord Malloch-Brown, Sir Jeremy cautioned against international intervention to remove the Assad regime on the grounds that too little is known about the type of government that would follow. In particular, he stated his concern at the potential for Assad’s stock of chemical weapons to fall into the hands of hostile, anti-western forces.

On 22 August, UNA-UK Chairman Sir Jeremy Greenstock appeared on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, as part of a discussion on Syria. Sir Jeremy emphasised the need for unified action by the UN Security Council to help bring about an end to the crisis. In particular, he questioned the motives behind Russia's decision to oppose the deployment of UN weapons inspectors to the site of an alleged chemical attack by the Syrian regime. In Sir Jeremy's view, "If the Russians want to be clear the regime didn't do this, they should support an inspection."
Other recent media appearances by Sir Jeremy on this issue include a Daily Telegraph article, published on 27 August, warning that it is "looking increasingly unlikely" that UN weapons inspectors will find clear evidence that the Assad regime perpetrated the chemical weapons attack and calling for the international community to put their full support behind a diplomatic settlement to this crisis.
