UNA-UK sends human rights petition to Party Leaders

To mark Human Rights Day 2014, UNA-UK – in cooperation with several other NGOs – called on the public to demonstrate their support for human rights by signing a petition to be delivered to the Party Leaders of the three major political parties.

The petition declared that human rights “uphold the inherent dignity of all people in the UK” and are important tool for holding the state to account. It also called on Party Leaders to commit to protecting the UK's human rights protections.

A fantastic 638 UNA-UK members and supporters, including a number of Parliamentarians and eight human rights organisations, signed the petition. This unified display of support underlined the need for Party Leaders to champion human rights both at home and abroad.

UNA-UK's Executive Director, Natalie Samarasinghe, has now written to the three Party Leaders, forwarding the signed petition and conveying the hopes of its supporters “that all parties will include a strong commitment to human rights” in their forthcoming manifestos.
