UNA-UK joins international R2P coalition

UNA-UK is delighted to announce that it has joined the International Coalition for the Responsibility to Protect (ICRtoP).

The ICRtoP brings together non-governmental organisations from all regions of the world working on the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) in order to strengthen the international normative consensus for the principle. In line with UNA-UK's recently launched R2P programme, the ICRtoP works to further understanding of the norm and encourage strengthened capacities to prevent and halt genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity.

Membership of the ICRtoP facilitates effective cooperation and information sharing between organisations working in the field of mass atrocity prevention. UNA-UK's first action as a member has been to send a joint letter to the UK Foreign Secretary, William Hague, with the Aegis Trust and Minority Rights Group.

The letter encouraged the UK government to make a strong contribution to the informal interactive dialogue of the UN General Assembly on R2P, which took place on 5 September 2012. The letter also asked for information on the role and activities of the national focal point who has been appointed within the Foreign & Commonwealth Office to coordinate mass atrocity prevention policies across the UK government.
