UNA Harpenden: UN flag raising ceremony

Councillor Brian Ellis, the Town Mayor and Honorary President of UNA Harpenden, attended our UN flag raising ceremony on Saturday 24 October 2015 to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations.

Councillor Ellis said that the United Nations was created to secure the possibility that nations may resolve potential conflicts peacefully, to alleviate poverty, hunger and the ravages of disease, and to ensure that every man, woman and child in the world enjoys basic human rights and the protection of international law.

During its 70 years, the UN has seen both great success and occasional failure.  However, it has proved itself to be an effective and influential agency of global cooperation and remains the world’s best hope of achieving the original ideal enshrined in the Charter: peace and justice with a healthy environment and dignity for every human person. It lies with each state and its citizens to ensure that the United Nations continues to be strengthened to meet future challenges.

The United Nations recognises the valuable contribution made by many national and international organisations and works closely with them. In the same way, Harpenden Town Council is pleased to support the work of local voluntary organisations such as the Harpenden branch of UNA-UK and is a corporate member of UNA Harpenden.  Trevor Evans, Chair of UNA Harpenden, then read the UN Secretary-General’s message for 2015.
