UNA Harpenden: Public meeting - the future of UN peacekeeping and the UK contribution

Published on

Updated:

Over 40 people attended the talk given by Lieutenant Colonel Matthew Whitchurch MBE about the future of UN Peacekeeping and the UK contribution. He illustrated how minor grievances can lead to conflict and highlighted the importance of identifying causes in the different aspects of conflict management carried out by the UN.

Lt Colonel Whitchurch spoke about lessons learned on the UN missions that he had served with in the Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He believes that UK military resources have been beneficial to many aspects of UN peacekeeping operations and he would like to see them making a bigger contribution in the future.

Two books, which he recommended for reading, are:

  • From Cold War to Hot Peace, by Anthony Parsons
  • Peacemonger, by Marrack Goulding

At the end of the meeting we presented a 70th anniversary commemorative edition of the UN Charter to the Town Council to Councillor Mary Maynard on behalf of the Town Mayor.
