On 28 February, UNA Harpenden held a public meeting at which Mike Gidney, Chief Executive of the Fairtrade Foundation, and Sue Bentley, a national campaigner and local organiser, spoke about their work at the Foundation.
Mike described the charity’s open certification scheme and ethical sourcing programme - which helps to obtain better payment terms for farmers and workers - and their campaigning for the involvement of corporations and the Government. Sue stressed the need for public pressure on supermarkets to source their products more equitably, for example, by shoppers asking for and buying fairtrade products.
The talks were followed by a lively discussion.
