It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Gillian Briggs, a cherished member of the United Nations Association (UNA) Birmingham Branch, who dedicated her life to the ideals of international cooperation, women’s rights, and social justice. Gillian passed away in a Birmingham nursing home after a lifetime of tireless service and unwavering commitment to making the world a better place.
Gillian’s involvement with the UNA spanned decades, beginning in the late 1980s when she represented the Moseley UNA Branch at regional executive meetings. Her dedication and passion led her to serve as Secretary of the Central Region from 1991 to 1992, collaborating with respected figures such as Frank Hooley and Michael Durkin. Gillian was a vital presence at UNA-UK events and within branches across the Central Region, including Birmingham, Moseley, Church Stretton, and Warwick District, where her intellectual rigor and thoughtful contributions were deeply valued. She also served on the UNA-UK Board, always advocating for the values and potential of the United Nations.
A trailblazer in both her professional and volunteer life, Gillian was a passionate advocate for women’s rights in employment and education. Her leadership extended to serving as Chairperson of the UNA Women’s Advisory Group, where she advanced gender equality and inspired others to champion these causes. She also engaged actively with Amnesty International, the Russian Society, and other organizations that aligned with her commitment to human rights and global justice.
Those who knew Gillian remember her for her warm personality, sharp intellect, and meticulous attention to detail. She was never one to shy away from challenging the status quo, always striving to refine and improve initiatives and resolutions to align more closely with her deep convictions.
Outside her activism, Gillian was known for her kindness, infectious enthusiasm, and ability to connect with people from all walks of life. Whether debating policy at a UNA conference or sharing a meal with friends at her favourite spot on Alcester Road in Moseley, Gillian brought joy, energy, and purpose to every interaction.
Gillian’s passing marks the end of an era for the UNA Birmingham branch and its members, many of whom fondly recall her as a cornerstone of the community. Her contributions to the UNA and her tireless advocacy for a better, more equitable world will continue to inspire those who follow in her footsteps.
She will be deeply missed by her many friends, colleagues, and all who were fortunate enough to know her.
