The United Nations Association Northern Ireland is organising an event with guest speakers Manuel Carta and Laura Hampton on the topic ‘Hope for Our World’, hosted by the Chair of Mid Ulster District Council, Councillor Eugene McConnell.

Guest speakers: 

A former Commissioner of the Italian Red Cross, Manuel Carta is currently serving in Belfast as an Emergency Response Volunteer.  He has participated in several humanitarian missions, including earthquakes, floods, landings, and the rescue of immigrants in the Mediterranean. He is currently a multilingual instructor at the UN World Food Programme in Rome. The title of Manuel’s talk is ‘Where Chaos meets Hope: The role of the Disaster Manager, with a subtitle ‘Field Experiences amid Natural Disasters and Community Recovery’.  Speaking ahead of the event, Manuel said, “What happens during a huge emergency, what are the changes in a city and why is it so difficult to intervene in the first moments? I will also talk about First Aid training at WFP UN."

Laura Hampton is from County Armagh and has recently completed a round the world sailing adventure to benefit UNICEF, the UN Children’s Fund.  The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race on the UNICEF boat raised over £440,000 for UNICEF and they won the final race as well!  The title for Laura’s talk is ‘From Orchards to Oceans – Tales of Eleven months spent circumnavigating the Globe’.  In advance of the event, Laura said, “After racing 46,200 nautical miles around the globe, in some of earth’s most challenging environments, I am delighted to be back home in NI and to share my story, trials and tribulations and to inspire hope for our future!”
