Putin and Russia`s Sphere of Influence on international relations and politics

In order to understand how Russia views the United Nations and its role within it, it is essential to understand how Russia perceives the West and other international organisations.   James will address the local UN Association and give his analysis of how post-Soviet Russia has interacted with the United Nations and how this has affected its foreign policy decisions and relationships with the UN as well as NATO and the European Union.

James is an academic researcher at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge. His research looks at the use of history in Russia today, and its role in policymaking and the wider society. His PhD analyses history in the education sphere, public celebrations and the ways in which the Russian government attempts to build a new civil society and national identity in the twenty first century by revising and resurrecting the past. He has conducted research in the Russian Federation, presented at several international conferences in English and Russian and visited much of the former Soviet space. His most recent publication is a book chapter entitled History Matters: the role of the past in Russian foreign policy in Vasile Rotaru and Miruna Troncota (eds.), Russia and the Former Soviet Space: instrumentalizing security, legitimizing intervention (Cambridge: Cambridge Scholars, 2017).
