Sir Jeremy Greenstock responds to the anti-Islam film protests

On 13 September, UNA-UK Chairman Sir Jeremy Greenstock and Paul Wolfowitz, who was Deputy Secretary for Defense under US President George W. Bush, appeared on Newsnight to discuss the wave of protests and attacks on embassies in the Middle East and Africa in recent days.

The catalyst for the violence is, ostensibly, the publicity given to a film that depicts Islam as a violent religion and portrays the Prophet Muhammad in an negative light.

According to the BBC, the film was first posted online on 1 July and attracted little attention. It was later picked up by various TV stations in the Middle East and prompted statements by several prominent figures in the region. It has now been viewed by hundreds of thousands of people.

US authorities have identified the film-maker as Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, an Egyptian-born Coptic Christian living in California.
