Open letter to Lakhdar Brahimi: we can't give up on diplomacy

On 1 September, veteran diplomat Lakhdar Brahimi took over from Kofi Annan as UN-Arab League envoy to Syria. His assumption of duties coincides with a period of heavy fighting and little confidence in a negotiated solution.

UNA-UK firmly believes that diplomacy is needed more than ever in Syria: to underpin action to be taken now, and to forge a consensual and comprehensive process for post-conflict transition. We also believe that although his task is certainly formidable, there are options for Brahimi to pursue.

The Association wrote to Brahimi on the eve of his assumption of duties with ideas on how he could build consensus and break down the Security Council gridlock. Click here to read the letter.

UNA-UK Deputy Director, Natalie Samarasinghe, explains the steps proposed in an article hosted by OpenDemocracy and e-International Relations
