Executive Director Phil Mulligan on Syria and the Olympics

In a piece entitled 'Can the Olympics save Syria?' and published in The Independent today, UNA-UK Executive Director Phil Mulligan looks at whether the Games and the ideals of the Olympic Truce could provide a fresh opportunity for dialogue and pressure on the Syrian regime.

As athletes from Syria arrived earlier this week, it was reported that the UK Prime Minister may discuss the country with the Russian President during the Games.

The UN Secretary-General, who will be carrying the Olympic torch today, has expressed hope that people and countries around the world will cease hostilities during the Games and respect the UN General Assembly resolution on the Truce, which was passed with unanimous support last year.
