As the UK and France press ahead with drafting a UN Security Council resolution on establishing a 'no-fly zone' over Libya, UNA-UK is pressing for the broadest possible support for such action, in particular active participation by Arab nations.
UNA-UK is also urging states to:
- ensure that the Council's arms embargo is fully respected
- take concrete steps at this week's Arms Trade Treaty negotiations in New York to prevent future misuse of arms by despotic regimes
- support the UN Human Rights Council's decision to dispatch a commission of inquiry to investigate alleged 'widespread and systematic human rights violations'
- donate generously to the UN's humanitarian appeal
- ensure that any potential decisions on establishing a no-fly zone are brought before the UN Security Council, and that any such action is actively supported by nations in the region.
