UNA-UK is saddened by the passing of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. The UK’s longest-reigning monarch, her life dedicated to service will be long remembered.
Chair of UNA-UK, Baroness Joyce Anelay, said:
“Queen Elizabeth II was a constant steadying presence in the life of our nation for seven decades. She set an exemplary standard of personal duty and behaviour and was an inspiration to all of us at home and overseas.
It was the greatest privilege of my life to serve for four years as Honorary Captain of the Corps of Gentlemen at Arms - the Monarch’s Bodyguard on ceremonial occasions. I was able to witness at first hand her unstinting devotion to serving our nation and her faultless diplomacy meeting visitors from overseas.
My thoughts and prayers are with the Royal Family at this saddest of times.”
Her Majesty visited the UN headquarters on two occasions, first addressing the General Assembly in 1957, then again over 50 years later, in 2010. In a statement, the UN Secretary-General said Her Majesty was a “good friend of the organisation” and paid tribute to her recent engagement at COP26 in Glasgow.
