UN chief urges unity and national reconciliation in Libya transition

With the al-Qadhafi regime in Libya reportedly on the brink of collapse, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has stressed the need to foster unity and reconciliation in the country.

In a phone conversation with Mustafa Abdul-Jalil, leader of the National Transitional Council, Mr Ban discussed post-conflict UN support to Libya. Mr Abdul-Jalil is one of a number of leaders, including the heads of regional organisations, that Mr Ban has spoken to in an effort to co-ordinate the international community's response. All are said to have underscored the importance of the UN taking a lead role in reconstruction and stabilisation efforts.
