A double issue of New World magazine, UNA-UK's flagship publication, has been released today, with copies winging their way across the UK and beyond.
'The uncounted' explores the world of development and demographics. With a major UN agreement on the future of sustainable development set to be adopted in September, the magazine takes a closer look at the state of the world in 2015.
A number of key global trends are covered, including articles on:
- Rwanda's approach to youth unemployment, by Jean Philbert Nsengimana, Minister for Youth and ICT in Rwanda
- Migration flows around the world, by Nikola Sander and Ramon Bauer of the Vienna Institute of Demography
- Cross-cutting discrimination faced by persons with disability, by Alexandra Heinsjo Jackson of the UN's Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia
We also debate the obstacles that must be tackled if we are to make any progress in these areas, such as:
- Inequality, as discussed by Oxfam International's Winnie Byanyima
- Data collection, as explained by the UN Development Programme's Paul Ladd
- Diversified finance, as explored in the magazine's main essay
Accompanying this is a special commemorative issue of New World celebrating the UN's - and UNA-UK's - 70th anniversary. You'll find:
- A decade-by-decade analysis of the major developments that have shaped the UN over the years
- An essay from UNA-UK's Chairman and Executive Director arguing for why states must invest more in our global system
- An article on UNA-UK's flagship UN reform programme, improving the Secretary-General selection process
- A souvenir pull-out section on the various ways the UN works for us all
Finally, be sure to also check out the special issue's back cover for first-to-know information on our UN70 events this October (here's a sneak peek).
