Ban Ki-moon: UK and EU will continue to be "important partners" of the UN

Following the UK's vote to leave the European Union, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has affirmed that the UK will continue to be a strong partner of the United Nations.

The statement expresses hope that the UK "will continue to exercise its leadership in many areas, including international development", while recognising the EU's valuable work on development and humanitarian issues, including migration.

Speaking in Paris on 25 June, the Secretary-General stressed the need for both the EU and the wider international community "to work towards a compassionate and humane solution to the problem of refugees and migrants", reiterating the role of Britain as a vital ally in resolving the crisis:

“The challenges we face do not stop at national borders. It is clear that when we work together, we are stronger”.

For UNA-UK, the referendum result will see us return to our original mission: making the case for global co-operation and global citizenship. In the coming months, UNA-UK will seek to engage all political parties in a debate on the UK’s global role going forward.
