Warwick District UN Association are delighted and honoured to have Jaclyn Streitfield-Hall from Global Centre for Responsibility to Protect at the Ralph Bunche Institute of the City University, New York Graduate Centre who will address our virtual meeting via Zoom platform.
Over the past four years the United States has systematically withdrawn from its commitment to multilateralism, international law and universal human rights. However, recent announcements that the Biden administration plans to recommit to the Paris Agreement, the UN Human Rights Council and the World Health Organization have given some hope for the US playing a constructive role in international forums. This change comes at a time of unprecedented global crisis, with the COVID-19 pandemic continuing to cause tremendous suffering, more than 80 million people displaced by conflict, persecution, and atrocities, and increasing disregard for international laws and norms in conflicts around the world.
Ms. Jaclyn Streitfeld-Hall is the Research Director for the Global Centre for the Responsibility to Protect. In this role she has editorial oversight for the R2P Monitor, Atrocity Alert and all of the Global Centre’s major publications. She also does research on populations at risk of mass atrocities in West Africa, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mozambique and Nagorno-Karabakh. Jaclyn is a primary contributor to the Global Centre’s work on Peacekeeping and Civilian Protection. Prior to joining the Global Centre for the Responsibility to Protect, she was a Research Assistant at the Cline Center for Democracy and taught International Relations and Comparative Politics courses at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. She received a B.A. from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and an M.A. from the University of Illinois.
Fifteen years ago, heads of state and government gathered at the UN World Summit and agreed to the principle of the Responsibility to Protect (R2P), a political commitment to protect populations from genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity and ethnic cleansing. From Syria to Myanmar, to South Sudan and China, the international community has often failed to fulfill the promise of R2P. During this meeting Jaclyn Streitfeld-Hall, Research Director at the Global Centre for the Responsibility to Protect, will discuss how the US can translate its renewed commitment to the UN and multilateralism into meaningful action to prevent mass atrocity crimes.
