Guest Speaker: Corinne Heaven

Corinne Heaven is a Research Fellow in the Department of Politics and International Relations at Reading University. Previously she was Fellow at at the Centre for Development and Peace in Duisburg, Germany. Corinne has experience of working with various think tanks and NGOs. Her current research interest lies on the nature and authority of international organisations, especially the UN, global governanace, the role of expert knowledge and Commission of Inquiry in the field of international law and human rights law.

World leaders are gearing up to confront grim life or death challenges this month at the 69th session of the UN, seeking to halt jihadist militants in Iraq and Syria, stem the spread of Ebola, to rebuild Gaza after a devastating 50-day war, and to encourage end of fighting in Ukraine and create an atmosphere in which nations can come to an agreement to sign a new Climate Change treaty next year in Paris. Question being asked "Is the United Nations fit for the purpose and challenges in the 21st century?"
