Guest Speaker: Dr Serena Hussain

Warwick & District UN Association are delighted to have Dr Serena Hussain come and address our regular meeting.

Serena`s expertise is in the area of radicalisation in the Middle East and the pressures that poses to Europe and the world.  Dr Serena Hussain is a sociologist and human geographer. She is currently a Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Trust, Peace and Social Relations, where she leads the research cluster on Communities and Change. Her principal area of expertise is in the Islamic community in West, with specific interests in spatial and social trends; social and political mobilisation; and intra-Muslim identity. She completed her PhD at the University of Bristol, and went on to obtain a Research Fellowship at the University of Leeds. She held a Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship at the University of Oxford, where she remained a Visiting Senior Research Associate at the school of Geography until 2013. Before joining the Centre for Trust Peace and Social Relations, she acted as the Principal Scientist on International Migration and Multiculturalism at Charles Darwin University in Australia.

Dr Hussain has worked as an expert consultant for a number of British Government departments, with organisations such as Ipsos Mori and the BBC World Service; and collaborated with academics from the US, Asia and Australia. She continues to work with community organisations, such as the Muslim Council of Great Britain and was a member of their Research and Documentation Committee for over a decade.

Some of her recent research has explored the implications of private Islamic schools on integration in the UK and US; the use of religious categories for official government statistics; inter-ethnic group relations among young people in post conflict areas of England; Kashmiri identity and activism in the UK; and Islamophobia and radicalisation in Northern Australia.

Please do come along and have your say on this very important international issue which is prevalent in our news media.
