UNA Twickenham & Richmond event report: Fukushima - An Ongoing Crisis

At a house meeting which he also hosted, Jim McCluskey gave details of the worst industrial catastrophe ever, which occurred in March 2011 when the Japanese Fukushima nuclear power plant was damaged by an earthquake and then overwhelmed by the following tsunami.

Jim went on to outline the immense ongoing dangers, describing, for example, how melted radioactive material has passed through steel and concrete and could cause a massive explosion if it reaches the magma underlying the bedrock. Also, contaminated seawater, returned to the ocean after being used to try and cool the cores, is having an effect 3000 miles away where radioactive fish are now being caught in Alaska and California.

As is so often the case with nuclear accidents, details of the magnitude of what is happening at Fukushima have been deliberately suppressed, this time by the recently passed Japanese secrecy law. Thus, politicians worldwide who make decisions on nuclear power have little undertanding of just how dangerous it is.

This is, necessarily, a very brief summary but Jim would be happy to discuss this vital issue further. Contact him on jim.mcclus@virgin.net or 020 8892 5704.
