Richard is the husband of Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, a 43 year old British-Iranian mother, who was arbitrarily detained in Iran. She and Richard married in 2009 and their daughter Gabriella was born in 2014. In April 2016, Nazanin was stopped and arrested in Tehran. After a grossly unfair trial, Nazanin was sentenced to five years in prison. She was then sentenced to one more year in prison in Iran and a ban on leaving the country. Richard campaigned tirelessly for her release and return to the UK, with her finally being allowed to return in March 2022.
