UNA Blackheath & Greenwich

Updated:

Our branch of UN has quite a high profile, one way and another, in UNA-UK, particularly through our membership of the London and South East Region UNA (of which the current chair of the branch is Hon. Sec. and editor of the Laser newsletter), having been the previous chair.

We normally meet at the Old Bakehouse, Bennett Park Blackheath Village, SE3 9LA on a weekday evening at 7.00 pm; meetings involve visiting speakers, filmshows, and brainstorming sessions.

Our branch has three main foci:

  • Campaigning on important issues - this involves lobbying both UNA-UK, and the British government, on issues, including climate change, violence against women, Trident and the arms trade, the Chagos Islanders, the Middle East, etc.
  • Fund-raising: The branch has a track record of fund-raising - initially for the Lewisham Refugee Network – which was founded by the branch; in the past we have held two International Art Auctions which raised funds for UNHCR and UNICEF. We plan another of these later in 2013.
  • We recently started the Greenwich Social Network, an informal friendship group designed to bring refugees into friendly contact with the host community. It is designed to alleviate the isolation of refugees living locally here in Greenwich.
