The meeting will debate the assertion that there is 'a growing and inevitable famine engulfing the world'. It will take place soon after the United Nations Rio+20 Conference on Sustainable Development which will principally address the green economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication, and the institutional framework for sustainable development. Its programme recognises food to be one of the seven most critical issues facing humanity but observers fear consensus will be hard to reach. At this late stage, a proposal has emerged for agreeing to sustainable development goals (MDG) as an outcome of the Conference. Late meetings in New York intend to bring these issues into focus.
