The role of the UN, through the utilisation of peacekeepers and other means, remains vital in maintaining peace, creating the conditions for sustained security and for the protection of civilians in situations of conflict. The prevalence of violence outside of open warfare, and the targeting of civilians during and outside of war, make peacekeeping, peacebuilding and conflict prevention more important than ever.
